Introduction to the Shell Jazz Bar

A lover of Japan, Xue spent more than one year in this incredible country, most of the time off the beaten path – that makes her stories and photos so much unique.

This time Xue discovered a hidden gem in the Onomichi city in the Hiroshima prefecture: the “Shell”.

If you are in Onomichi you will understand just by saying “shop of shells”. Master of “Rodin”, Mr. Seiichi Ishikawa has a big collection displayed in the shop of beautiful shells from all over the world. He is also a jazz lover and has an impressive collection of music CDs  and more than 100 gramophones collected. (source)

“The older you get, the wider perspective you have.”

80 years old couple running this insane bar with over 50 years collection of those sea creatures and nearly 200 talking machines. I was in shock and lost sense of space after walking into this place.

Little island somewhere in Philippines. Little grandpa has visited there for 43 years consecutively to expand his shell collection.

尾道人はとかく経済を超えてしまう。
尾道通なら「貝の店」というだけでわかってしまう。「ロダン」のマスター石川晶一さんは蒐集マニアで、広い店内には世界中の美しい貝殻で埋めつくされている。そればかりかジャズも大好きでSP、LPレコードからCDまで数え切れないコレクションをもち、さらには蒐集した蓄音機は100台を超えている。(写真/中は世界一小さい蓄音機)
また年に一度のジャズのライブコンサートを主催するといった、その活動も半端ではない。
カウンターに埋め込まれたショーウインド(写真/上)には宝石のような美しい色彩を放つ貝たちが整然と飾れれ、壁という壁は大小さまざまな貝で埋め尽くされている。
初めて訪れたお客は、店内に飾られたこれらのコレクションに魅せられ、当分席に着くことはない。それも当然のことで、ここはジャズが流れる博物館の中にある洋酒喫茶コーナーだと吾輩は理解している。博物館なのだから、まずは展示された品々を拝見するのが筋というものだ。
尾道人はとかく経済を超えてしまうといわれるが、さりげなく、淡々とした口調のマスターは、まさにその典型の一人だろう。
各種カクテルやマスターが数十年来ハマっているフィリピンの美しい海をイメージしたオリジナルカクテル「トマイキキ」「ラプ・ラプ」が楽しめるほか、アルコールに目っきり弱い方には「ロダン」特性のアイスクリーム「ハロハロ」がおすすめだ。
写真(下)はそのゴージャスな「ハロハロ」のアイスクリーム!!　器はもちろん「貝の店」にふさわしく本物の貝だ。見ているとヨダレが出るんだニャン……。(source)
