Best of Kanchanaburi Tiger Temple

A visit to the Tiger Temple in the Kanchanaburi province of Thailand is a surrealistic experience and controversial. Getting close up and personal with a tiger is once in a life time adventure.

History

The Tiger Temple was founded in 1994 as a forest temple and sanctuary for wild animals including tigers.

In 1999 the temple received the first tiger cub, one that had been found by villagers; it died soon after. Later, several tiger cubs were given to the temple. As of July 2014, the total number of tigers living at the temple has risen to 135. (Wikipedia)

My Taiwanese friend, Joyce, had to borrow 1,000 USD to pay for the airplane tickets, hotel and pocket-money. At Christmas time the banks are closed, and the travel agency doesn’t accept credit cards…

We flight at mid-night and so the adventure began.

Revamping some old stories from West Africa, with a hint of nostalgia and wanderlust. The African adventure happened in 2010/2011, after my Asia and Indochina tour.

After a short break in Bangkok coming from Cambodia, I started my long trip to West Africa: 40 hours!

The Flight

Bangkok to Cairo: 10 hours, Cairo to Lagos (Nigeria): 5 hours. In Lagos I was supposed to wait for 8 hours for my next connection to Accra (Ghana). In reality I was waiting for 11 hours for the Nigerian Airlines airplane to come. At least, after I surrounded my passport, I was allowed to use the business lounge – food and drinks for free. Once the lounge was empty and music from Asha was playing, the waitresses started to dance!
